By now you’ve most likely stopped watching Agents of SHIELD. I mean, didn’t you hear? There were like almost 4 whole or maybe half episodes during season 1 where it like was kinda maybe Possibly boring and stuff. So, of course, the collective internet went aghast, screaming SELL! SELL! SELL! Oh my God! SE…wait…

…what do you mean? Oh, the show found its groove, you say? Fantastic new characters were introduced? Oh, the storyline did what? Wow, season 2 sounds amazing… CANCEL SELL ORDER! CANCEL SELL ORDER!! BUY! BUY! BUY!

Regardless, my hope is that you’ve seen the season 2 finale of Agents of SHIELD or at least have read our recap. If you have, then you know that the season 2 finale really set up Agents of SHIELD season 3. But while you saw that Skye will be recruiting and leading a team of superpowered individuals, you may not be familiar with the comics from which the Agents of SHIELD season 3 stories will presumably mirror.

In short, they made it pretty darned clear that Agents of SHIELD season 3 will introduce the Caterpillars. In addition to profiling Skye aka Daisy Johnson aka Quake, we’ve also teased the Caterpillars.

What I want to do now is list each member of the Caterpillars, walking through which ones could appear in season 3 of Agents of SHIELD.

Remember, there are some practicalities with a TV show like budgets and special effects, so I’ll also speculate on how I think the show creators could make each caterpillar “come to life.” I’ll also speculate on how each character might create a tie-in to the overall Marvel Cinematic Universe, because that’s a whole big thing.

Good heavens, I’m 260 words in and I haven’t even shared a character. Let’s get started!

[divider]Potential New Characters: Agents of SHIELD Season 3 Predictions[/divider]

Hellfire

Marvel Hellfire Agents of SHIELD Season 3JT James took the codename ‘Hellfire.’ Hellfire’s powers was the ability to charge objects with fire energy, which he typically used on a chain. Besides whipping around a fire chain like Ghost Rider or something (he was the grandson of the Phantom Rider, after all), Hellfire was the resident smart-alec cynic of the group, a role currently occupied by Agent Hunter.

Hellfire also had a brief romance with Quake, but in order not to spoil the comic run, I’ll just say that it ended badly. Which, hey, fits Skye aka Daisy Johnson aka Quake‘s character quite well, come to think of it! But season two teased Lincoln as Quake’s new love interest, and Lincoln has electrical powers, which could mean he’ll be mashed-up with Hellfire.

On the other hand, whipping around a fiery chain would make for fun TV, and the special effects could be handled by a team scrambling to meet a frantic weekly schedule. I’m not sure if Marvel was able to retain the rights to Ghost Rider, so Hellfire could be a nice way give a nod to that franchise.

For those reasons, I’d call Hellfire’s inclusion in season 3 of Agents of SHIELD to be more likely than not.

Druid

Sebastian_Druid_(Earth-616)-Secret_Warriors-22Sebastian Druid is the son of Doctor Druid who shares his father’s skill with magic and goes by the ironically uncreative codename ‘Druid’.

With the Doctor Strange movie on the horizon, Marvel undoubtedly wants to start dropping hints in their other properties. Agents of SHIELD (and tentpoles like Iron Man) are decidedly in the science/technology framework of explaining powers. In fact, a major point of dramatic tension during season 2 of Agents of SHIELD is many of the team’s lack of comfort with powers that are alien in nature and can’t be defined easily via scientific reasoning. Magic will flat freak out Simmons and Mac, which could be an element to continue to explore in season 3.

Even better, the comic story of Druid is one of the best of the series. In short, he doesn’t have the work ethic to cut it as an Agent and is removed from the team, having been seen as a liability. His arc of trying to prove himself could make for great TV.

If Druid appears in season 3 of Agents of SHIELD, I’l be giddy, mostly because it will give us clues to how Marvel intends to handle and display the use of magic for the upcoming Doctor Strange movie.

Manifold

Manifold Caterpillars Season 3 Agents of SHIELDSpeaking of characters I’d be giddy about, let’s talk about Manifold. Eden Fesi (Codename: Manifold), has reality warping powers and was previously under the care and training of the mutant Gateway.

Marvel is cleverly engaged in warfare with Fox for the rights to mutants. Even though Marvel lost those financial rights in their turn of the century bankruptcy, they are cleverly regaining mindshare from the mutant characters by brilliantly repurposing Inhumans for storylines that would’ve gone to mutants.

Sure, maybe we can’t get a Gateway backstory because he’s a mutant, but Marvel can introduce the Manifold character by retconning him into a Inhuman. Please, please, please just discover Manifold on a walkabout in Australia, if only as a nod to long time X-Men fans of Gateway.

Gordon showed that teleporting can be done my a television special effects team, now give SHIELD their own teleport in Manifold.

Phobos

Alexander Aaron was the son of Ares, the God of War, and took the codename ‘Phobos’. Phobos is the young God of Fear, who possesses the power to instill fear in others.

While this could provide a nice tie-in to the Thor property and Agents of SHIELD has had Lady Sif as a guest while exploring Norse artifacts, I’d find it unlikely that the writers would introduce a kid to the team. Plus, Agents of SHIELD is trying to establish Inhumans now. Eh, IDK. I’m calling Phobos’ introduction unlikely, but that’s mainly because his run in the comics was much less compelling than other characters.

Stonewall

Jerry Sledge (Codename: Stonewall), is the son of Carl “Crusher” Creel, the Absorbing Man, in the comics and possesses similar abilities to his old man.

Agents of SHIELD already introduced an Absorbing Man character in season 1, so special effects can handle displaying the powers, plus Marvel’s new Netflix Daredevil series gave a nod to Crusher during the flashbacks of Matt Murdock’s father. Could it be that this all leads up to an introduction of Stonewall on season 3 of Agents of SHIELD?

Possibly. The bummer is that Jerry Sledge wasn’t necessarily compelling character in the comics.

Slingshot

Catepillars_team_2Yo-Yo Rodriguez (Codename: Slingshot) is the daughter of the Griffin. Yo-Yo’s power is to run at superhuman speed, but bounce back to the point where she began running. I hate to end this list on a down note, but I have no choice.

Slingshot might play as a poor-man’s analogue for Quicksilver, who was recently introduced in Avengers: Age of Ultron, but other than a field injury and a friendship with Stonewall, she wasn’t fleshed out much in the comics. My guess is she’s not a part of the Caterpillars when Agents of SHIELD season 3 returns this fall.

My Agents of SHIELD Season 3 predictions would be Hellfire and Druid, plus I really hope Manifold makes the cut, but other than that, I’m not certain the others are the Caterpillars were looking for. There were other little known teams not led by Quake in the comics, and perhaps Marvel is looking for some deep cuts and will create amalgamations of these various characters for use. Regardless, season 3 of Agents of SHIELD can’t get here soon enough.

How to Get up to Speed on Agents of SHIELD https://nerdsonearth.com/2014/12/get-speed-agents-shield/ Mon, 29 Dec 2014 22:36:39 +0000 https://nerdsonearth.com/?p=1013

Are you not a comics person, but are wondering how to get up to speed on Agents of SHIELD? Well, you are not alone, so here is some help.

We’ve been recapping and reviewing Agents of SHIELD for quite some time now, and over the last couple of weeks we’ve written several articles that discuss the comic origins of the major characters.

Well, this has gotten one reader hooked, but not being a comic person, he feels a little lost and wonders how to get up to speed on Agents of SHIELD. He emailed us a list of questions, and our hope is that this won’t only help him, but will be helpful to anyone who is trying to jump on the Agents of SHIELD Quintet in mid flight.

Earth Nerds,
I got the Flu a few weeks back. Naturally, that meant I needed to binge on a new show on Netflix. I landed on Marval’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

Now I’m hooked! I’ve watched the first season and the season two episodes up to this point. I love it.

But I need your help. I’m not a comic book person – I don’t really know much about the S.H.I.E.L.D. “world”. I know it ties in with Iron Man and Captain America, but I have questions…

1. I get that S.H.I.E.L.D. is connected with the Marvel “world” with Captain America and Iron Man. What should I know about this world – what are the basics?

imagesKeep in mind that everything I share will be an oversimplification. We’re talking 75 years of comics history, so I’ll only give you high level stuff, as you can really achieve nerd overload with too many details.

Simplified, SHIELD is the Marvel Universe’s peace-keeping force. They are like the CIA, FBI, Interpol and MI-6 rolled into one bada@@ operation. They gather intelligence, go on covert ops, and under Nick Fury’s leadership, have tried to anticipate the bad moves plotted by the big, bad guys.

Unlike the television show, Nick Fury has for 90% of comic history been portrayed as a grizzled old white guy with an eye patch, and he has historically worked with Captain America, Iron Man, Black Widow, etc. to tackle some big, bad stuff, all with the goal of keeping the world safe.

2. S.H.I.E.L.D. intertwines with other movies and shows. Which ones? I have 2+ months before S.H.I.E.L.D. season two starts again – what other movies and shows should I watch while waiting? Preferably listed in order by which I should watch them.

Avengers and Captain America 2 are essential, and will provide a ton of context for you. If you enjoy those, go back and pick up Iron Man 1, Thor 1, Captain America 1, Iron Man 2, Thor 2, and Iron Man 3.

3. When watching S.H.I.E.L.D. I feel like there’s more I should know about Director Fury that isn’t revealed in the show. Why is he so removed from the Agency? What happened to his eye? Why did he (SPOILER ALERT) turn S.H.I.E.L.D. over to Agent Coulson instead of continuing to run it himself?

A lot of this is answered in Captain America 2. What happened to his eye, you ask? If you want to read a few comics that relate heavily to the TV show, then check out our review of Secret Warriors, which also talks about Fury’s eye.

4. It seems like (SPOILER ALERT) the world is on the brink of collapse with Hydra taking down most of S.H.I.E.L.D.. Why don’t Captain America, Iron Man, or the Avengers step in and help?

captain_america_the_winter_soldier_hd-t2The cynical answer is that Cap and Iron Man are busy setting up action figure licensing deals with Disney.

The practical answer is that you couldn’t film that level of action and effects on a small screen budget, so you save those stories for the movies.

The answer as it relates to trying to give a plausible comic answer is that SHIELD as a spy agency is better equipped to handle covert type of threats, whereas Captain America and Iron Man are best suited when they have something big and tangible to hit. I’m still hopeful we’ll one day get to see a Chris Evans appearance on SHIELD. Wouldn’t that be grand?

5. At the end of “What they become”, the last episode before the long break in season two, (SPOILER ALERT) what do you think happened to Skye? I couldn’t tell – did it also happen to Raina? What do you think happened?

What happened to Skye and Raina is that they were transformed into Inhumans, which are superpower beings created by the Kree, the blue Alien race featured on SHIELD and also in the Guardians of the Galaxy movie.

The Inhumans are a long time Marvel Comics property (and a pretty cool one at that). Since Marvel doesn’t have the movie rights to the X-Men (they were sold to Fox when Marvel was going through tough financial times at the turn of the century), they are currently enhancing the storylines that involve the Inhumans.

Daisy Johnson Skye InhumansThe plan is for the Inhumans to play the large role that would’ve gone to the mutant X-Men, had Fox not owned those rights. In 2018 Marvel will be releasing an Inhumans movie, so between now and then we can expect tons of Inhuman storylines in the comics and on Agents of SHIELD. This is a long play unlike anything we’ve seen before. In short, Marvel has 3 years to create a fan base for the Inhumans movie.

Specifically, Skye is the Character Daisy Johnson, AKA Quake, from the comics and although it’s not confirmed, I’m guessing Raina might become this obscure character from the comics. Here’s a full character spotlight on Quake, which will be helpful when you are anticipating the back of of season 2 of Agents of SHIELD.

I realize this won’t fully get you up to speed on Agents of SHIELD, as there is simply too much comic history to catch all the Easter eggs noticed by long-time comic readers, but I do hope it helps. It’s a great show and I only think it will be getting better and better.

Comic Characters You Should Know: Quake https://nerdsonearth.com/2014/12/who-is-daisy-johnson/ https://nerdsonearth.com/2014/12/who-is-daisy-johnson/#comments Mon, 22 Dec 2014 17:05:06 +0000 https://nerdsonearth.com/?p=987

Who is Daisy Johnson? Well, she is also known as Quake, and is certainly a Marvel comic character you should know. Here's a quick look.

I really like the Marvel character Daisy Johnson and I’m going to tell you why. But first, some backstory.

We all knew that Nick Fury is a grizzled son of a gun with plans within plans. But even devout Marvel fans may have missed Secret War, the 5 issue mini series that introduced Quake, Fury’s proverbial ace up his sleeve.

When Skrulls covertly infiltrated Marvel’s super hero community with their shape shifting shenanigans, Fury knew he needed to collect some firepower that was off the grid and beyond the Skrull’s reach. This list of potential superhero talent was the Caterpillar Files, which included Daisy Johnson.

[divider]Who is Daisy Johnson?[/divider]

At age 17 Daisy was found to have an extremely high IQ, yet was failing out of school and had been arrested for shop lifting. Her lack of discipline and direction was hardly unexpected considering Daisy had been given up for adoption after being the illegitimate daughter of the brilliantly psychopathic Mr. Hyde and his regular prostitute companion, Laura Johnson.

After her powers manifested, Nick Fury took Daisy under his wing, seeing her as a daughter figure. Fury had such incredible trust in both Daisy’s power and leadership potential that at age 18 she was granted Level 10 SHIELD security clearance, something only he and Black Widow had.

[divider]What are Quake’s Powers?[/divider]

quake daisy johnson shieldWith Daisy Johnson’s powers being seismic in nature, she took the code name Quake.

Quake generates the shakes, powerful vibrations which can produce effects resembling something large like an earthquakes or something smaller and more targeted. She’s also a SHIELD Agent, son, so she’s a killer hand-to-hand combatant and excellent marksman.

Under Fury’s training, Quake learned superb control of her powers and comic fans got to see those powers displayed in a broad way. At points we’ve seen her target her seismic waves with pinpoint accuracy, causing objects to vibrate themselves apart from the inside out. In one great scene we saw Quake explode the heart of Wolverine, shaking it while in his chest. At another time we saw Quake respond to Fury’s orders to “bring it down” and she subsequently unleashed a massive leveling earthquake.

[divider] What are Daisy Johnson’s Major Comic Story Arcs?[/divider]

Quake_Daisy_Johnson_Angelina_JolieLet’s get back to Secret War and Secret Invasion. In the 5 issue Secret War mini-series we get a great look at Quake powers, while this first appearance also established her look. Brilliant artist Gabriele Dell’Otto based the look of Daisy after Angelina Jolie’s appearance in the movie Hackers.

Both the Secret War and Secret Invasion limited series (both included in the Marvel Unlimited digital app) are the best look at Quake’s origin and powers. It’s there where she is introduced as Nick Fury’s sidekick.

But it’s in the Secret Warriors series where Daisy Johnson goes from sidekick to center stage. We have a full review of the Secret Warriors series, so I won’t go into much detail here, but if you are looking to see how Daisy Johnson performs as a covert strike team leader, that’s the series to read.

[divider]Daisy Johnson, Agent of SHIELD?[/divider]

Daisy Johnson Skye InhumansIf you have been keeping up with ABC’s television series Agents of SHIELD, then you’ll know that there was a big Daisy Johnson reveal in season 2.

After teasing the Skye’s true identity, it is now confirmed to be Daisy Johnson. The television show keeps with Daisy Johnson’s seismic powers, although they haven’t been teased out yet. The TV show also keeps with Daisy’s father being Mr Hyde, Calvin Zabo.

But form there, the TV ventures off into some interesting directions. Instead of Daisy’s powers being the result of Mr. Hyde’s genetic experimentations, it is confirmed that her powers are because she is, in fact, an Inhuman. Things are getting good, folks!

Daisy Johnson is a Marvel character that is too overlooked. While the television series will now certainly raise her profile, there are already some great comic reads for Quake. Give them a look.
