The newest Dungeons and Dragons adventure, Icewind Dale: Rime of the Frostmaiden, was just announced on Wizards of the Coast’s Roll with Advantage stream and is set to release in mid-September 2020. This horror adventure is set in the far north of the Forgotten Realms. Historically, that area of the Realms is seen as a ghostly, desolate frozen land and in this adventure they have made the villain the Frostmaiden of the title. Curiously enough, she will show up in a variety of forms and with different stat blocks throughout the various adventures.
When describing the title, the creators Jeremy Crawford and Chris Perkins talked about building an adventure that was focused on isolation, paranoia, and secrecy. In addition to facing the Frostmaiden, there is also the villain and challenge of the cold, desolate environment. It includes some new mechanics that will work not only for this adventure, but also for other frozen adventures as well, like surviving on minimal food or having to survive an avalanche.
Icewind Dale: Rime of the Frostmaiden is designed so that it can be done as one long adventure, but there are also some tips on how to breakdown the adventure into smaller parts that Dungeon Masters can use throughout other adventures. Another exciting part that the creators mentioned was the creation of a large number of games with rules for players to play through. So everyone should get ready for the Winter Olympics of the Realms! (Goliaths will play Human Curling in my world for certain!)
Every year in June, the Wizards of the Coast team holds an event where they reveal what the major fall release of their product will be. In our current world, where hosting an actual event is an issue, the Wizards team instead is doing an online event on Twitch, Roll With Advantage.
Roll with Advantage will host liveplay games with celebrities, and also serve as a fundraiser for Red Nose Day. And Wizards will be hosting liveplay remote games that anyone can jump into and be involved with over the course of the whole weekend (June 18-20).
If you are interested in supporting the Red Nose Day efforts of the Wizards of the Coast group, you can make a donation, buy a sweatshirt, t-shirt, or a hoodie with an adorable Snowy Owlbear logo, or purchasing the adventure “Return to the Glory” that is being put up on DMSGuild in conjunction with this release.
