Disney announced that Taika Waititi will direct a brand new Star Wars film. Waititi will direct the film as well as co-write the screenplay with award winning 1917 screenwriter Krysty Wilson-Cairns. Other than that, very little else was detailed.
While an Oscar winner, Waititi, is perhaps best known by nerds for Thor: Ragnarok and the season finale episode of The Mandalorian, so he is adept at working seamlessly in other peoples’ sandbox on the most highly visible projects.
He also has a knack for balancing light-hearted, silly comedy with real emotional drama. As with Thor: Ragnarok, Waititi has shown he does action well and has a deft ability to take characters in new directions while having them interplay wonderfully within a large cast.
So, Waititi’s talent is well known. What’s left to discover is actual news related to the movie and us nerds may need to wait a while for that. IMDB lists Untitled Taika Waititi Star Wars Film for a 2024 release, giving the director plenty of padding to complete Thor: Love and Thunder for Phase 4 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).
Until then, we’re left to wonder whether this is a brand new trilogy set in the High Republic, a spin-off like Rogue One, or something else entirely.
With the Skywalker Saga coming to an end, Star Wars might go in a myriad of directions. One of those directions will be at the direction of Taika Waititi.
