The Punchlist: This Week’s News for Nerds

Welcome to this week’s PUNCHLIST, where we round up the biggest news in nerd culture. It might be from the MCU, board gaming, D&D, and more. But whatever the news is this week, you can bet it will eventually separate you from your money.

7. First Stand-Alone Adventure for Starfinder: Junker’s Delight

Junker’s Delight, the first stand-alone adventure for Paizo’s Starfinder RPG system, invites 1st level heroes to aid in the recovery of the lost science vessel the Stellar Flare. Included in the book, which will release on August 5, 2021 and retail for $22.99, are new creatures, spells, and equipment.

6. Hellraiser Rights Returning to Clive Barker

Clive Barker’s involvement in the Hellraiser franchise has been nil since 1988’s Hellbound: Hellraiser II, but that will change on December 19, 2021. The American rights to the franchise of his creation will return to Barker then, making him the necessary gateway to any future adaptations. In the meantime, a TV series (which Barker is attached to as executive producer) and a movie are in the works – though the later hasn’t seen much in the way of development as of yet.

5. Monster Hunter Movie Banned in China

A racially insensitive joke will likely cost the Monster Hunter movie millions of dollars. The movie has been suspended from Chinese theaters – even with a version of the movie without the offensive material on offer. The blowback was so great that Campcom Asia, the company behind the massively successful Monster Hunter video games, distanced themselves from the movie on social media.

4. Oscar Isaac Lands Solid Snake Role

Sony is working on a movie adaptation of Metal Gear Solid, and Oscar Isaac is set to play Solid Snake, the series’ main protagonist. And this after Isaac expressed an interest back in 2019! Jordan Vogt-Roberts (Kong: Skull Island) is set to direct.

3. WB Will Premiere All of Its 2021 Movies on HBO Max and Theaters

In a highly controversial move, Warner Bros. announced that its entire slate of 2021 films – including The Suicide Squad, The Matrix 4, and Dune – will premiere simultaneously on HBO Max and in theaters. Each of the more than a dozen movies will have a one month access period on the streaming service before reverting to theater only viewing.

2. IDW Scores Godzilla Licensing

IDW and Toho International, Inc. announced a multi-year deal granting IDW rights to all things Godzilla for publishing and games. IDW already has plans for a comic book miniseries for middle school readers, and has eyes on other applications of the IP for coloring books, tabletop games, puzzles, and more.

1. Marvel Debuting Alien Comics in March of Next Year

Marvel’s Alien comic “will center on a Weyland-Yutani mercenary named Gabriel Cruz who must battle a deadly new breed of xenomorph with the survival of his child at risk.” The comic is made possible via Disney’s acquisition of 21st Century Fox back in March of last year.
