The Biggest Board Game of All Time Just Got BIGGER

We previously highlighted how Gloomhaven was the biggest board game of all time, but Frosthaven, it’s highly anticipated sequel, has turned out to be even BIGGER.

Frosthaven’s Kickstarter closed today at a pledged amount of $12,969,608. This remarkable sum officially places it as the number one earning board game ever on Kickstarter.

83,193 backers pledged $100+ for what promises to be a remarkable game. Frosthaven’s campaign description and videos show that the sequel has everything that made Gloomhaven the #1 overall rated board game on Board Game Geek. Plus, Frosthaven adds even more.

Gloomhaven first went to market via Kickstarter only to come to local game shops (FLGS) a year later. Frosthaven was positioned to be even friendlier toward retailers by offering a pledge level specific to brick and mortar stores.

610 retailers backed Frosthaven at this level, a highly significant number. For context, the Game Manufacturer’s Association (GAMA) lists 800 stores in its FLGS locator. While there are certainly more game shops out there than that, a figure of 610 certainly indicates that a hugely significant number of shops are ordering retail copies of Frosthaven through the Kickstarter campaign. Kickstarter is absolutely becoming a major distribution alternative in the board game industry.

Again, this is on top of 83,193 individual backers. So the market interest in Frosthaven is astronomical.

This isn’t surprising. Gloomhaven is shockingly impressive. I love board games and comics and miniatures and all sorts of nerdy things. I’m impressed with the quality of the items us nerds enjoy. But Gloomhaven left me slack-jawed the first time I opened the box, absolutely and overwhelmingly stunned with the game. I’ve never seen anything like it and inspires me to open up a thesaurus to look up synonyms for impressive. (BTW: Profound, monumental, splendid, remarkable, extraordinary, and grand, among others.)

Board gamers are hoping for the same in Frosthaven and just shelled out $12,969,608 on that hope.
