The Punchlist: This Week’s News for Nerds

Welcome to this week’s PUNCHLIST, where we round up the biggest news in nerd culture. It might be from the MCU, board gaming, D&D, and more. But whatever the news is this week, you can bet it will eventually separate you from your money.

7. N.K. Jemisin Named MacArthur Fellow

Jemisin, the Hugo Award winning science fiction and fantasy author behind the Broken Earth series, was announced as a member of 2020’s class of MacArthur Fellows for her novels which explore “deeply human questions about racism, environmental crises, and familial relationships.” You can catch a full list of the 2020 Fellows here.

6. Doctor Strange Confirmed for Spider-Man 3

Benedict Cumberbatch’s Doctor Strange will feature in the untitled third Spider-Man movie starring Tom Holland. This news follows on the heels of the reveal that Jamie Foxx’s Electro will also appear in the film, leading to lots of speculation that the multiversal shenanigans in Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness will spill over into the Spider-title.

5. Disney Pivoting to Prioritizing Streaming

Disney just announced that their primary focus as a company for the near future will be their streaming services. It remains to be seen how this will affect their approach to theatrical releases, but more information is promised in a virtual event for investors set for December 10th.

4. Super Nintendo World to Open in Japan Spring of Next Year

Universal Studios Japan will open a new Nintendo themed expansion to their park in spring of 2021. The area will be heavily Mario themed, and feature thematic snacks, aesthetics, and rides – including a Mario Kart one! Click the link below to check out the concept art!

3. First Look: Marvel’s M.O.D.O.K. TV Series

The Patton Oswalt-helmed series featuring Marvel’s big-headed baddie is on its way to Hulu, and clips from the show along with interviews with creators and talent featured in a panel during New York Comic Con’s Digital convention. It is done with a stop-motion styled animation and skews towards the comedic end of the pool as the titular character struggles with a bankrupt organization and family life. 2. Robert Kirkman’s Invincible Series Gets a Trailer

Invincible adapts the comics of the same name from Robert Kirkman (of The Walking Dead fame), and is due to hit Amazon Prime next year.

1. The Animaniacs Are Back!

Also debuted during the NYCC online event was a trailer for the return of The Animaniacs, set to release on Hulu on November 20, 2020. It parodies a scene from the original Jurassic Park movie with excellence and should be watched multiple times.
