The Punchlist: This Week’s News for Nerds

Welcome to this week’s PUNCHLIST, where we round up the biggest news in nerd culture. It might be from the MCU, board gaming, D&D, and more. But whatever the news is this week, you can bet it will eventually separate you from your money.

7. Neil Blomkamp Secretly Filmed a New Horror Movie

During the quarantine, Blomkamp managed to quietly film a movie described as a “supernatural horror flick” and one “he has reportedly wanted to make for a long time.” Almost no other details have been divulged, but we’re excited to see what the District 9 director has in store!

6. Funimation Acquires Crunchyroll

In a $1.175 billion deal, Funimation has purchased rival anime streaming service Crunchyroll. Sony, who is behind Funimation, now owns the largest anime streaming service on the market by far. The two services are anticipated to merge in the near future.

5. Brian K. Vaughn to Write New Buck Rogers TV Series

Acclaimed comic book writer Brian K. Vaughn is now attached to a developing Buck Rogers show for Legendary TV. A movie and anime adaptation of the character are also in the works.

4. The Last of Us Part 2 Wins Big at the 2020 Game Awards

The Last of Us Part 2 won Game of the Year, Best Game Direction, Best Narrative, Best Audio Design, Best Performance (Laura Bailey as Abby), Innovation in Accessibility, and Best Action/Adventure Game. Visit the link in the “More here” below to see the full list of winners.

3. Chris Pine to Star in Dungeons and Dragons Movie

Hasbro/eOne and Paramount are co-producing, financing, and distributing a new movie based on the popular tabletop RPG, and Chris Pine is set to headline. The movie has been written and will be directed by Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley.

2. Star Wars: High Republic Stream Coming January 4th

The High Republic is set hundreds of years before The Phantom Menace during the heyday of the Jedi Order. The stream’s pitch:

The event will feature all five authors behind the launch stories of The High Republic — Claudia Gray (Into the Dark), Justina Ireland (A Test of Courage), Daniel José Older (IDW Publishing’s The High Republic Adventures), Cavan Scott (Marvel’s The High Republic), and Charles Soule (Light of the Jedi) — as well as Lucasfilm Publishing’s Michael Siglain and StarWars.com’s Kristin Baver. Fans can look forward to fresh insights into the characters and events of The High Republic, along with new announcements and reveals of what’s to come.
