Recap and Review of She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, S1E5: Mean, Green, and Straight Poured into These Jeans

She-Hulk: Attorney at Law continues on the Disney+ scene with episode 5! It’s time for the ultimate showdown between She-Hulk and Titania! Let’s check in and see how are things going for our new favorite Hulk!

She-Hulk Episode 5 opens with Jen being bombarded on all sides by…advertisements for Titania’s line of She-Hulk beauty products. Seriously, they’re everywhere! Even her brother is getting in on the action, coming over to her house to get her to sign boxes of the merchandise.

Jen and Nikki need to do some recon, so they go to the She-Hulk product launch party where it appears that Titania is selling literal and figurative snake oil. While there, they run into Titania who shuts Jen down; the name ‘She-Hulk’ is hers and she isn’t giving it up.

Back at the lawyers’ office, Nikki calls in a favor from Pug. She-Hulk is still wearing a suit that doesn’t quite work for both her AND Jen, and Pug happens to have a drip broker named Alonzo. You see, he’s a big sneakerhead so he has those connections.

They head to a Boba Tea joint, which apparently is a front for this amazing and incredibly exclusive superhero suit designer. In the back room, they’re presented with a cabinet filled with bootleg Avongers merchandise. No, that’s not a typo. After agreeing to purchase some, they get to meet with the designer: Luke. They’re only able to make an appointment after lying that She-Hulk is an Avenger, but the meeting is on the books.

Jen teams up with Mallory Book, another lawyer at her firm, to help her get out of this Titania mess. They come up with angle that they present in court; the news and media gave Jen the She-Hulk name, and that was the first instance of the name ever being used. Titania counters with a clip where Jen says She-Hulk isn’t her name and won’t ever be her name either. The counter is countered with another clip where Jen says whether she likes it or not, she is She-Hulk.

The judge needs more evidence of Jen using the She-Hulk name, so they take a recess so Jen and Mallory can come up with their exhibits.

That gives Jen plenty of time to meet with the designer, Luke. He is clearly very busy and sees interruptions as a waste of his time. When Jen says she just wants a business suit, Luke pulls out from working with her. However, Nikki saves the day by asking Luke if he wants to design for a Hulk. He’s never done that before, right? Plus, if there’s anybody who can design a suit that works for Jen and She-Hulk together, it’s him!

After running into one of her bad dates, Jen gets the novel idea that parading her bad dates from Matcher in front of the judge would be just the corroboration she needs to win the suit against Titania! And that’s exactly what she does. One by one, all of those failed dates sit on the stand and agree that Jen presented herself as She-Hulk on the platform. It’s an unconventional approach to a court case, but it ends up being the genius move to force Titania to cease the distribution and sale of her She-Hulk line!

She-Hulk wins without even throwing a punch!

Mallory and Jen, who hadn’t really been on good terms to this point, go out for a drink to celebrate. They bond over how nobody respects women and men always think they can do better. Holloway couldn’t have done what Jen did to win that case.

Jen heads over to Luke to pick up her outfit. Turns out that Luke made two, but we don’t actually get the see the final reveal. Instead, we get a little sneak peek at a suit piece for one of Luke’s other clients when we see the Daredevil helmet!

Thoughts on She-Hulk: Attorney at Law S1E5: “Mean, Green, and Straight Poured into These Jeans”

When we saw Titania in episode 1, I didn’t expect that the final showdown between She-Hulk and Titania would be strictly tied to the courtroom. Maybe there’s more confrontation coming? After all, Titania seems like the kind of person who would totally be reasonable and fade away humbly into the backdrop after the verdict…right?

We also still haven’t seen any more about the Wrecking Crew. Could that have just been a setup for a future Marvel project? Since we also don’t know who the Wrecking Crew is employed by, is there maybe a chance that Titania and the Wrecking Crew are going to team up to take down She-Hulk?

Getting an extra glimpse into Pug’s personal life was a treat. As it turns out, Pug is a nerd just like all of us! The riffing between Pug and Nikki is a real delight, especially when he’s like a kid in a candy store with all that Avongers merch. I must say that the supporting case of She-Hulk has been really enjoyable, and might be my favorite of all the MCU shows out thus far.

A really interesting watercolor is shown during the credits that has prompted its own Reddit thread. On the shelves in the background we see shoes that are all superhero-inspired, but all of them don’t represent characters that have been introduced in the MCU. There isn’t a whole lot of detail on the shoes, but it’s still intriguing if this still is canonical because it prompts the acknowledgement of these other heroes!

Once again, we get some courtroom antics. Last week it was magicians and this week Titania is trying to peddle her beauty products right there to the judge. I’ve always liked courtroom shows, especially Boston Legal and Suits, and it’s refreshing to get this lighter take on the American judicial system.

Artist 100% Soft has also confirmed that they were the real drip broker for She-Hulk Episode 5 via their post on Instagram. So, if you saw the bootleg Avongers merchandise and said something to the effect of ‘I have to have that’, then know that your wish will soon be answered! It’s coming!

I also thought that Episode 5 of She-Hulk was one of the better episodes because it started to tie some of these seemingly innocuous scenes together. The whole dating subplot was actually setting up the resolution to this court case, which I didn’t really expect. It also set up the meeting with Daredevil and perhaps we will see some crime-fighting if she can get a mentor like Matt Murdock?

Oh! And I can’t forget to include Luke! When he saw She-Hulk and asked if the hag convention was in town, that set the tone for his entire character. He’s a no-nonsense guy who prides himself on his exceptional talents, and I hope we continue to see more of him in future Marvel projects. He’s the Edna “E” Mode of Earth-616!

All in all, She-Hulk continues to be a fun enterprise and I’m more than happy to tune in each week. I do hope some more action is coming, because I feel like we’ve been building up to something between Abomination, Titania, and the Wrecking Crew. Let’s tie all those threads together now!
